I heard you whisper my name late last night
While you slept, as the autumn-scented air
Made the tree’s shadows dance in the moonlight
On the muslin curtains, while I stood there
By the doorway, quietly watching you,
Waiting to hear what your next words would be.
Then you opened your eyes and I felt you
Feel me there, and I swear you smiled at me
Before you closed your eyes and slept once more,
Leaving me wondering about your dream.
I stayed a while longer, there by your door,
Watching the shadows dance in the moonbeam.

Those shadows would be ours, dancing on your floor,
If you and I could be lovers once more.
